Board Game Reveals More Than Expected
“In addition to the regular monthly meetings, we host a couple of board dinners throughout the year so our directors can get together and socialize. At these dinners, our managers provide some sort of educational update about their area of focus.
I decided to present our board with a game - How well do you know our donors? - was the focus of the quiz and it included numerous questions about the make-up of our donor constituency. I was able to use our PhilanthrAppeal database to extract information about how many gifts we had received over a period of time, identify donors who had given the most both in frequency and total amount, highlight the largest and smallest gifts ever received, as well as analyze the geographic make-up of our donors. I originally intended this to be an educational piece for our board members, but quickly came to realize just how informational the results were for me as well.
I think all organizations have basic assumptions about their donor make-up - who they are, where they come from, level of gift frequency, etc. For this particular exercise, it was nice to have the PhilanthrAppeal System substantiate our assumptions and even correct some of the perceptions we had about specific initials and geographic areas. It also helped open up new areas of concentration that we were not focusing much attention on previously. The overall outcome was positive for both me and the board - and what was initially intended to be a fun game is now a task that will be completed on a regular basis throughout the year.”
